Common questions

What is a METAR?

A METAR is a routine observation of the weather at an airport, issued about once an hour in a compressed code. It reports wind, visibility, present weather, cloud layers, temperature, dewpoint, and altimeter setting for a single moment in time. A SPECI is the same format issued off schedule when conditions change sharply.

What is a TAF, and how is it different?

A TAF is a forecast rather than an observation. It covers a radius of about five statute miles around the airport, usually for 24 or 30 hours, and is written as a sequence of periods. FM means conditions change and stay changed, BECMG means a gradual transition, and TEMPO and PROB describe possibilities laid over the prevailing forecast rather than replacing it.

How do I read a METAR?

Read it in order: station, time in UTC, wind, visibility, present weather, cloud layers, temperature and dewpoint, then altimeter, with anything after RMK as supplementary. What do VFR, MVFR, IFR, and LIFR mean?

They summarise ceiling and visibility together. VFR is a ceiling above 3,000 feet and visibility over 5 miles. MVFR is a ceiling of 1,000 to 3,000 feet or visibility of 3 to 5 miles. IFR is a ceiling of 500 to 1,000 feet or visibility of 1 to 3 miles. LIFR is below either of those. Ceiling means the lowest broken or overcast layer, so scattered layers do not count however low they sit.
